Q1. 한국에 5년 이상 살았습니다. 무조건 귀화 신청이 가능한가요?

A. 아닙니다. 거주 기간 5년 외에도 다음 요건을 모두 충족해야 합니다.

첫째, (거주) 적법하게 5년 이상 계속하여 한국에 주소가 있을 것

둘째, (영주자격 전치주의) 귀화 신청 전에 ‘영주권(F-5)’을 먼저 취득한 상태여야 함

세째, (생계유지 능력) 본인 또는 동거 가족의 자산이 6,000만 원 이상이거나 한국은행이 고시하는 전년도 1인당 국민총소득(GNI) 이상의 소득 입증

넷째, (기본 소양) 사회통합프로그램(KIIP) 이수 또는 종합평가 합격 필요

Q2. 한국어 실력이 부족해도 신청할 수 있나요?

A. 한국어 능력은 필수 요건입니다. 사회통합프로그램(KIIP) 5단계를 이수하고 종합평가에 합격하거나 귀화 면접심사를 통과해야 합니다. (단, 미성년자, 60세 이상 등 면제 대상 제외)

1. General Naturalization (for foreigners residing in Korea for 5 years or more)

Q1. I have lived in Korea for more than five years. Can I automatically apply for naturalization?

A. In addition to the five-year residence requirement, you must also meet all of the following conditions:

• Residence: You must have continuously and lawfully resided in Korea for at least five years.

• Permanent residency prerequisite: You must have obtained permanent resident status (F-5 visa) before applying for naturalization. (This rule was changed on December 20, 2018.)

• Livelihood capability: You or your cohabiting family members must have assets worth at least 60 million KRW or proof of income equal to or greater than the per capita GNI.

• Basic knowledge and competency: You must complete the Social Integration Program (KIIP) or pass the Comprehensive Evaluation.

Q2. Can I apply even if my Korean language skills are poor?

A. Korean language ability is a mandatory requirement. You must complete Level 5 of the Social Integration Program (KIIP) and pass the Comprehensive Evaluation, or pass the naturalization interview. (Exceptions apply for minors, those aged 60 or older, etc.)
